Quarantine

Singapore is in a state of paranoia. Yep, thats my view. THEY think its just 'necessary measures'.

Im referring to the quarantine procedures taken up by the government. They decided to quarantine, or at least 'home quarantine', anybody who has traveled to any H1N1 (better known as swine flu) affected countries. The Ministry of Health (MOH) has released this list of affected countries that will be updated continuesly. The last update was putting Indonesia in the list.

Dont get me wrong. I agree that we need to prevent the spread even further, seeing as singapore already has so many cases. I think the measures taken by Changi airport (such as temperature scans) are very good, and sending those people affected to quarantine (like that HongKong AYG football team) is a wise desicion. What I resent is the fact that people who live in hostels are being quarantined like prisoners without proper facilities.

For one thing, it is true that we came from affected countries, but we never showed any signs or symptoms of H1N1. Even if the argument is that the symptoms will show later, I still do not understand why the facilities are so limited for us. We must not step out of the room, but we need to get water, wash our utensils, keep our food in the fridge, etc. In order to do those things, we need to go to the pantry (duh) but we cant do that if we cant go out of our rooms right? We cant even do our laundry! And my hostel in particular is going to cram 3 people in a two-bedded room, with an extra bed inside. HELLO?!? I cant even fit the extra bed anywhere! Its still standing against my wardrobe now.

Furthermore, I still cant believe Indonesia is actually listed as an affected country. PLEASE LA! I just got back on sunday and for the whole week I was in Jakarta there was no cases reported in the news. NOT ONE. Not in the news, not in the newspapers, nobody talked bout any cases, NONE. People there havent heard 'swine flu' for so long its already forgotten. Then suddenly Singapore thinks Indonesia has a flu pandemic? Malaysia has obviously many more cases than Indonesia has, but its not in the list yet. Even Singapore itself has more cases than Indonesia, if Indonesia has any. Well, okay, Indonesia has some, tho not as many as malaysia i believe.

People who dont live in hostels and dont experience this quarantined-in-hostel may not understand my ramblings. Trust me, I am not happy with any of these s**t, and neither do you if you're in my shoes. Especially there are many irrational things going on, things that doesnt makes sense to us.

Im an open-minded person. But this has gone beyond my understanding.
